Notes About Sunday’s Music

June 3rd, 2018 - Corpus Christi

Today we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, also known as Corpus Christi. All of today’s hymns help u reflect upon the great mystery that is the Eucharist. The opening hymn, “Lord, Who at Your First Eucharist” reminds us that because of this sacrament we are in fact all one body, unified in Christ. Our offertory song, “One Bread, One Body” reinforces this idea, reminding us that “gentile or Jew, servant or free, woman or man” we are all connected through the Eucharist. Our communion hymn, “Bread of life, Cup of Blessing” elaborates on Jesus’ teachings regarding salvation, and ends with Jesus washing the feet of his disciples before commanding them “just as I have done, so also you must do.” In this command Jesus reminds us that we must continue his work through our actions and care of others. Our recessional hymn “Alleluia! Sing to Jesus!” sends us forth with songs of praise. In the third verse of this hymn reminds us that the bread of angels is here to stay, and that though we are sinners, we always have a friend in our redeemer, Jesus.
